AT&T Inc. NYSE: T, based in San Antonio, Texas, is the largest provider of both local and long distance telephone services and wireless service (Cingular Wireless LLC, a joint venture with BellSouth; AT&T intends to acquire BellSouth in a US$67 billon stock deal announced on March 5, 2006) in the United States. The modern company was formed 2005 by SBC Communications' purchase of its former parent company, AT&T Corp. As a part of the merger, SBC shed its name and took on the iconic AT&T moniker (originally American Telephone and Telegraph) and the famed T stock-trading symbol (for "Telephone").
